i always see this trend of people not wanting to touch the knobs on their amps to suit the EQ settings on their amps but would rather replace things like OTs. like someone would say, "my blah-blah amp is too bright/woofy and thinking of replacing my OT." then after a few posts from others, the same person may say, "i have my treble/bass control at noon (or 11:00/1:00/whatever) and that's how i always set my control(s). my tone controls are very effective in correcting the brightness/bass response but the amp sounds too bright/dark/etc... with the way i set my tone controls. i need to replace my OT." um..., is it me or it's just pure silliness? to me it's like someone complaining Telecaster bridge pickup is painfully bright without rolling off the treble at the guitar via "tone control" or the car won't start without using a key in the ignition..... Wink

I agree, I read far to many complaints about equipment from people who are just to lazy or to ignorant to make basic tone changes. Most amps have a lot of engineering behind them and they are not built to sound bad, on the user end however the vast majority have little or no training on correctly setting up and useing this key piece of the audio chain.

It is bad in the amp universe, but when you get to devices that incorporate modern features such as MIDI, parameter adjustments, tap tempos, and the like, it is almost laughable the conclusions some people draw from their own ignorance. There are several notable forums where incorrect information appears daily, and idiots there go around arguing in favor of it. Sometimes it makes me crazy, but then I think, well, at least MY tones are not suffering at the hands of fools.... or are they? Smile

I'm thinking that's why the knobs are there in the first place...I could be wrong.

I would like to add; have you ever noticed how the greats have a way of sounding pretty much the same no matter what amps they're using? Most people attribute this to the "tone is in the fingers" way of thinking. IMO while this may be true to a certain extent it's not the whole answer. I think it has more to do with the fact that these people spend a lot of time developing a "style" and a "sound" and simply know how to get the sound they want from almost any amp they use. There are many examples of this but one that comes to mind at the moment is Joe Satriani. For years he used Marshalls and now he uses Peaveys, guess what he sounds very much the same. People on that level know how to USE the equipment to get the sound they want. If more people spent the time required to learn and understand the equipment I suspect there would be far less pointless criticism.

well, i found that if you work just one amp (with no effects) until you get the sound you want then you can get the sound out of just about any amps regardless of how many knobs there are on the control panel. and it really doesn't matter what you play out of after that because you know how to work the controls to get the sound you want. i see a lot of people try to buy their way through their "sonic quest" and it seems kinda wasteful. i do agree that getting new gear is exciting and all but i would like to get the most out of what i get, too. and that usually involves twiddling the knobs a lot. Smile

I have to relearn this from time to time. Usually about the same time I'm reviewing the receipt for the latest GAS attack Embarassed .
