Hey all, I was wondering if you could give me some opinions on what you think is the brightest EL84 is available currently. I would like to stay away from NOS since I am on a budget...

I have been hearing that the JJ's are a little dark...

Ei EL84s are pretty bright. Dunno if you can find them anymore -- Ei seems to have gone out of the tube business -- Westrex has an announcement on their website that they bought Ei's tube manufacturing assets. http://www.westernelectric.com/

I wouldn't say that. I have a couple of JJ EL84s and they both sound pretty bright and chimey. I have a Sovtek EL84 that is much darker - very noticeable difference. Of course, bright and dark is all relative to the listener's ear and throw in guitars and settings on top of that and you will get many different opinions.
